HOW ARE WE SECURE

Homeland security is both held up by the cooperation between the military and the police, at Terra Nova. Its goals are to prevent any extremist group from forming, and if they should, to stop them. Homeland security is, therefore, primarily achieved through the appliance of software. This software includes programmes not only directed at tracking the GPS of the cellphones of possible criminals and terrorists, or suspects, but also involves security software for the system network itself, meaning anti-malware/software/virus programmes (preventing and detecting potential malicious software), as well as intrusion prevention systems (IPS, monitoring network activity), firewalls and cryptographic software (automatically encrypting data should it be stolen, but only decrypting it for the police, government or the individual it belongs to). Especially because Terra Nova’s community relies so heavily on electronics, and incredible amounts of personal information about every single citizen is stored online, it cannot be risked that it can be simply retrieved by a skilled hacker. For that reason, the common citizen will be relatively limited concerning what they can do independently through technology and the internet, only having access to innocent, common websites (web surfing), email services, online games, etc. and knowing that each site they visit can be traced back to them, were this necessary, decreasing the “anonymity” of the internet having brought so many issues in real-life, like online bullying.

Rather than using identity cards or passports, biometrics are applied, meaning that fingerprints of each citizen can be recorded in the database along with other information that is pulled out by police or government whenever a citizen causes any doubts or trouble. Moreover, concerning infrastructure, all homes, work buildings and public malls, supermarkets, restaurants, hospitals, etc. are protected by automatic alarm systems, a network of a combination of motion sensors and cameras.
Also, considering the occurrence of natural disasters, Terra Nova owns a natural disasters control alert center which monitors the natural processes of the Earth around and nearby Terra Nova, through sensitive sensors placed periodically on critical geographical hotspots, sending signals to this center, should any changes occur. In the case of an emergency, like a hurricane, a storm causing possible flooding, an earthquake, not only would the natural disasters control alert center immediately contact the government, the people would be alerted right away as well since everybody carries a cell phone. In a real-life instance, we can recognize how many cell phone available applications have become available that claim to alert of natural disasters, like “Natural Disaster Monitor”, “Disaster Alert” and “StormTracker”. Natural disaster centers, as exemplified in our Utopia, can be recognized in Hawaii, like for example the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii.
